As part of its commitment to local food systems, Montana Farmers Union recently donated 35,000 pounds of pork to the Montana Food Bank Network. In the face of continued high inflation and slashes to federal funding for nutrition programs, the donation will help feed Montana families across the state.
“Farmers Union has donated several loads of pork, starting during the COVID pandemic because, as farmers, we strive to feed people, and our food banks are struggling more now than ever to find protein,” MFU President Walter Schweitzer said. “The budget reconciliation cut funding for nutrition programs, increasing the number of Montana residents who will go without food. This donation of pork will help the Montana Food Bank Network provide nutritious meals to tens of thousands of Montana families.”
The donation is one aspect of MFU’s relationship with MFBN that also includes MFU covering the processing costs of any livestock processed at USDA-inspected Montana Premium Processing Cooperative in Havre that is donated to Montana food banks and pantries.
