Montana Farmers Union applauds senators Jon Tester’s and Chuck Grassley’s recent letter to colleagues in opposition to any policy riders in the FY 2024 Agriculture Appropriations bill that weaken the Packers and Stockyards Act and its protections for producers and consumers.
“Montana Farmers Union appreciates senators Tester and Grassley standing up for family farmers and ranchers by opposing corporate-backed proposals to undermine the Packers and Stockyards Act,” MFU President Walter Schweitzer said.
More than 100 years ago, Farmers Union was instrumental in drafting and working to pass the Packers and Stockyards Act, and MFU still supports the provisions in the bill that protect family farmers and ranchers and consumers by tackling anti-competitive practices.
“The Biden Administration has made some updates and has successfully enforced the PSA rules in several anticompetitive practice violations by the corporate monopolies. There are several updates currently under review. These proposed riders would undo and stop these critically needed updates,” Schweitzer said.
Schweitzer encouraged the rest of the Montana Congressional Delegation to follow Tester’s and Grassley’s lead by opposing any rider that adversely impacts the Packers and Stockyard Act.
