Bill Information

  • The goal of this bill is to provide a tax incentive opportunity for retailers to stock Montana foods on their shelves, providing a subtraction from individual income and corporate income taxes for the income from Montana-Produced food. Details of this are on page 4 line 18 and page 6 line 20. This is completely voluntary, and retailers can choose to utilize this incentive or not.

Talking points

Most importantly, share your story and how this bill could impact you and your farm and your products/or the farmers and ranchers you may work with.

One of the biggest problems producers face is access to markets. The Montana Food First bill will help by incentivizing Montana retailers to put Montana foods on their shelves.

We see firsthand how much influence and control large corporations have in our food systems. Many of them are raking in record profits, while we are paying record high prices for groceries. Farmers and ranchers haven’t seen an increase in the prices they received for their products. The pandemic shined a light on our broken food system and showed us that we need to strengthen and build up resiliency in local and regional food systems.

The Montana Food first bill supports local farmers, ranchers, growers, retailers, grocers and entrepreneurs, and keeps more consumer food dollars in our local economies.

This bill supports regional and local food system resiliency.

This bill will help Montana consumers have better choices at the grocery store and to buy what their neighbors are producing.

This incentive is completely voluntary to retailers and lets them decide what is best for them and their community.
