FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 29, 2020
Great Falls, MT- In response to Governor Bullock’s letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue requesting allowance for in-state custom meat processing Montana Farmers Union President Walter Schweitzer issued the following statement:
“MFU appreciates Governor Bullock working on common sense regulations and oversight to allow our custom butchers to help feed Montanans during this time of crisis. I am certain our local butchers will process quality meat that will be as safe or safer than the multinational packers especially the plants that are mixing in foreign beef.”
According to a press release issued by the Governor’s office USDA has not allowed local meat markets to process donated local livestock for institutions and food banks.
