MFU Applauds Defeat of CI-121

HELENA – Montana Farmers Union praised the success of a broad coalition formed to keep Constitutional Initiative 121 off the November ballot.
The Know the Consequences: No on CI-121 campaign – comprised of 16 diverse members, including MFU – announced Thursday it had been successful in keeping CI-121 from qualifying for the ballot.
“Working together with such a broad and diverse coalition ultimately led to CI-121’s defeat,” MFU President Walter Schweitzer said, adding he enjoyed working with a coalition that united such broad factions from around the state.
MFU argued against the initiative, saying it would shift the tax burden onto small business owners, including farmers and ranchers.
“I’m proud of Montana voters,” Schweitzer said. “They had a look at CI-121, they thought about the negative consequences, and they said no.”
