GREAT FALLS, MT (July 25, 2008) – Montana Farmers Union (MFU) will present record earnings to farmers enrolled in the Farmers Union Carbon Credit Program at a press conference Tuesday. In conjunction with the checks being distributed, MFU President Alan Merrill and MFU Membership Director Jim Sargent will be joined by area farmers Chad Doheny, Dutton, and Del Styren, Brady, for the announcement.
WHO: Montana Farmers Union
WHAT: Press Conference
WHEN: Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 11:00 AM
WHERE: Montana Farmers Union Insurance Building 300 River Drive North, Great Falls
Farmers Union has been approved by the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) to enroll producer acreages of carbon into blocks of credits to be traded on the CCX, much like other agricultural commodities. Large companies, states, cities and even consumers buy credits to offset their own carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Once the credits are sold, producers earn income based on the acres they have enrolled.
Nationwide, $8 million has been earned by producers since the voluntary program began in late 2006. The program includes more than 3.8 million acres from 2,346 producers in 26 states. In Montana, more than 100 farmers and ranchers will receive earnings of more than $551,000 from no-till and seeded grassland offsets.
